Performances.

We believe taking part in performances is as crucial to pupils’ development as working towards exams. Therefore Clifford Studios endeavours to involve pupils in as many shows as possible.

Along with the excitement of dancing for an audience, the students experience the joy of shared achievement and the commitment required to successfully work as a team.

Performances range from dancing for their parents at the end of term, to events + productions planned by local organisations. You can see  highlights of our previous shows/showcases below.

Exams.

Pupils from each class that are judged to be ready (usually after 3 – 4 terms of study) take exams in the ISTD syllabi (Modern + Tap) and the RAD syllabi (Ballet). They start with ISTD Tap + Modern and RAD Ballet around the age of 6.

Taking an exam is the culmination of all work put in by the pupils throughout their classes. The exam is an opportunity to showcase what they have learned and have an external dance specialist reward their efforts. Through taking exams, pupils learn the value of hard work and understand the concept of working towards a goal; essential life lessons regardless of whether pupils intend to make dance their career.

Exams also give a purpose and meaning to their dance classes; the sense of achievement upon receiving their certificate further inspiring them for the future.

ISTD + RAD exams are recognised by the National Qualifications Framework and, as such, from Grade 6 level, pupils accrue UCAS points with their exam results. Exam results are also recognised Duke of Edinburgh Award goals.

Exam procedures.

Parents are informed in advance by the class teacher if their child is judged to be ready for an exam. This is entirely at the discretion of the teacher and is usually a term or two ahead of the planned exam. They receive an email asking if they want their child to be considered, followed up a few weeks later - if the answer is yes - by a detailed email, outlining times, dates + fees. (Please note: exams are a non-profit making part of the school).

Pupils need to ensure consistent attendance throughout the year however, in ʻexam termʼ it is particularly important. In addition to the once a week classes, pupils taking exams will be required to take part in additional coaching sessions and mock exams. Any pupil who fails to attain the exam standard through lack of attendance, or any other reason, will be withdrawn from the exam at the discretion of the teacher.

As pupils take their exams in small groups, they need to rehearse doing so. This includes where to stand, which order to dance in and in general familiarise themselves with dancing some exercises solo.

Approximately 6 weeks after an exam session takes place (held either at the school or at the ISTD/RAD headquarters if a smaller group), exam results are sent through to the Studio Founder.

They are awarded marks in several criteria and the overall percentage totalled to ascertain their result. The school then distributes the mark sheets in a sealed envelope to each pupil. Pupils do not open these at the hall and pupils have no obligation to share their results with anyone other than their parents. Where appropriate, the teacher will discuss the marks and sections with the students as a group or individually. The criteria is also discussed in advance so the students know what the examiner is looking for.

Following this, the school receives the certificates from the ISTD/RAD which are also distributed.

Exams are non compulsory and not right for every pupil. Both the ISTD and RAD offer 'Class Awards' which are less pressured yet still offer the opportunity to have the students efforts rewarded. We also offer internal exams when students are not able to take exams for logistical purposes.

We take pride in ensuring each student takes the right path for them. It is administratively time consuming to accommodate but one 'bad' exam experience can have a negative effect on that student's dance 'journey' forever.

Dance classes are key to developing a love of movement, music and exercise which is why we have experienced and passionate teachers leading every session.
