UPDATE 28th Feb 2017

As well as noting the time below, there are a few things we need to make sure you are aware of for the exam day itself.

1) Uniform needs to be freshly washed. This includes skirts. (For Pre Primary's - please ensure you do not put a hot iron on the chiffon skirts - hand wash and leave to dry in shower is probably easiest!)
2) Pupils need PINK socks and tights rather than faded grey ones! Please ensure no holes in tights!
3) We will be providing satin ballet shoes for the pupils to wear in the exam. These have been fitted at classes.
4) Pack all items of uniform required including character skirt and shoes where required. (Some of you are borrowing skirts - your children know who they are).
5) Pack a ZIP UP top for your child to wear over their uniform whilst in the changing room so that removal does not affect hair.
6) Please do not wash hair the night before as this makes it hard to style. Please ensure you have pins, grips, hairbands, hairbrush, hairnet + spray for Miss Lucy to use on the day.
7) Remove all jewellery and nail varnish before arriving at RAD HQ.
8) Do leave plenty of time to arrive and park on the day!

UPDATE : 25th JAN 2017

Now that we have heard back from all of you and cross checked your availability with the Genee studio and Miss Lucy, we can let you know that the Sat 18th Feb coaching session will be 10.15 - 11.00am.

Getting there:
The RAD website has a comprehensive information page on getting to the venue which can be found here.

If you are thinking of driving, rather than using public transport, then perhaps you could consider lift sharing as there will be a few of you going;

Parking restrictions on the roads around the RAD are not in place on a Saturday so you won't need to pay at the meters.

RAD EXAMS: March 2017

We are pleased to invite pupils from Pre Primary, Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 4 to take their RAD Ballet exams this March. To find out why we do exams, and how they can be beneficial; please take a moment to read my blog post of a few months back; 'What Exams Mean to Us'.

You will have received an email stating which exam/class award we are considering your child for however, if you are unsure, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

About the Exams:

Exams will take place at the RAD HQ in Battersea.

We will apply to the RAD by 20th January and will be allocated dates between 6 - 24th March. It is likely that your child will need time off school for the exam which is classed as an 'authorised' absence. Below is a PDF you can print out and send in to school requesting the time off once we have the dates + times from the RAD.

Pupils take their exams in groups of 2 – 4 and wear their Clifford Studios Ballet uniform.

Approximately 6 weeks after the exam session, the RAD will send the exam results through to the school. Pupils taking an exam receive either a Pass, Merit or Distinction. They are awarded marks in several criteria and the overall percentage totalled to ascertain their result.

If they are taking a class award, they are assessed on 4 components; Technique, Music, Performance + Dance, and are marked in each as Never, Occasionally, Generally or Frequently.

The school distributes the mark sheets in a sealed envelope to each pupil. Pupils should not open these at the hall and pupils have no obligation to share their results with anyone other than their parents.

Following this, the school will receive the certificates from the RAD and at this point, parents will be invited into the class to see their children receive their certificates.

Exam Preparation:

Pupils need to ensure consistent attendance throughout the year however, in ‘exam term’ (in this case the Spring Term), it is particularly important.

In addition to the once a week classes, pupils taking exams will be required to take part in additional coaching sessions. If the required number of coaching sessions/classes are not met, we will have to withdraw your child from the exam. We would far rather a pupil did not take an exam than did so underprepared. A positive exam experience is fun and enjoyable, however a negative one can be extremely damaging to a pupil's confidence and love of dance.

As pupils will be taking their exams in small groups, they need to rehearse doing so. This will include where to stand, which order to dance in and in general familiarise themselves with dancing some exercises solo. For the higher grades, it is common practice for pupils to take two classes a week in order to build up the stamina required. As the pupils will be taking their exam in an unfamiliar space, we will also be arranging a session for all candidates at RAD HQ so that the first time they see the space is not when they run in for their exam!

Please see below for the timetable of extra coaching sessions.
