Coaching + Exam Timetable

Thanks everyone for making payment of the exam fee itself. The students have been working well and please let me know if you do not have the music for exam practise. This was sent via WeTransfer.

Please find below the timetable for coaching, and then the timetable for the exams themselves.

Both timetables have been created taking into account groups involved e.g. if they are doing 2 exams, hall space, studio space, Mother's Day lunches, teacher availability as well as some requests re swimming galas and school events.

As you are all aware, attendance is vital. Your children are all fantastic dancers and we don't want nerves to get in the way of them showing the examiner their best work. We make sure they know the steps inside and out so that if initial wobbles do happen, their muscle memory will take over!

ISTD Exams - March 2018

We are pleased to be holding Tap + Modern exams at Kitson Hall on Sunday 25th March and Wednesday 28th March 2018.

If this will be your child's first exam with Clifford Studios, please take the time to read my blog post from September 2016 here. It's about why we do exams and the school's approach to them.

You will have received an email stating which exam we are considering your child for, however, if you are unsure, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Process

Pupils will take their exams in groups of 2 – 4 and wear their Clifford Studios Tap + Modern uniform.

Approximately 6 weeks after the exam session, the ISTD will send the exam results through to the school. Pupils will receive either a Pass, Merit or Distinction. They are awarded marks in several criteria and the overall percentage totalled to ascertain their result.

The school distributes the mark sheets in a sealed envelope to each pupil. Pupils should not open these at the hall and pupils have no obligation to share their results with anyone other than their parents.

Following this, the school will receive the certificates from the ISTD and at this point, parents will be invited into the class to see their children receive their certificates.

Preparation

Pupils need to ensure consistent attendance throughout the year however, in ‘exam term’ (in this case the Spring Term), it is particularly important.

In addition to the once a week classes, pupils taking exams will be required to take part in coaching sessions. If the required number of coaching sessions/classes are not met, we will have to withdraw your child from the exam. We would far rather a pupil did not take an exam than did so underprepared. A positive exam experience is fun and enjoyable, however a negative one can be extremely damaging to a pupil's confidence and love of dance.

As pupils will be taking their exams in small groups, they need to rehearse doing so. This will include where to stand, which order to dance in and in general familiarise themselves with dancing some exercises solo.

Fees

Exams are a non profit making part of the school. The ISTD sets the exam fees themselves and we then charge a further fee to cover extra coaching (hall hire + teacher time), hall hire for exam day, examiner refreshment, practise music and music operator.

Usually we would request the total amount right away however, with the studio opening date being uncertain, we are requesting the exam fee only at this stage. If we are able to hold coaching sessions at the studio this will reduce fees greatly. Additionally, the amount of coaching required will depend on the students progress this half of term. We aim to keep costs down wherever possible.

Fees are as follows:

Primary Tap - £32.70
Primary Modern - £32.70
Grade 1 Tap - £33.70
Grade 1 Modern - £33.70
Grade 2 Tap - £35.70
Grade 2 Modern - £35.70
Grade 3 Modern - £41.90
Grade 6 Modern - £50.00

Please make payment for the above amount(s) by Friday 2nd February. Payments should be made via bank transfer to the school account.

Coaching

As per the information above, we do not yet know where the coaching will take place or how much will be required. Please keep the following dates free and we will let you know as soon as possible when your child will be required. They will be called for 30 -60 minutes per exam they are taking for coaching and for 25 - 55 minutes for their mock exam.

Saturday 3rd March (from 2.30pm)
Sunday 4th March
Saturday 10th March (from 2.30pm)
Sunday 11th March
Saturday 17th March (from 2.30pm)
Sunday 18th March
Saturday 24th March (from 2.30pm)

Exam Day

We will release the exam timetable before February half term so that you can plan accordingly. Should your child be scheduled on Wednesday 28th March, and therefore need time off school, please find below a letter you can submit with your request. Taking an exam is classed as an authorised absence.

Summer Term

Not everyone from every class is taking an exam in March. Some are taking them in July. Therefore, following the exams, your child will go up into the next grade and may no longer be with their usual class mates.

At this stage, we are planning for the timetable to stay the same as it is now, so you can look ahead to see what your child's schedule will look like for the Summer Term.

Grade 3 Modern pupils:
As there are no Grade 4 pupils taking their Modern exams in March, the result will be a large Grade 4 class for the Summer Term if those taking their Grade 3 move straight up.

Ellis and I are still considering what would be the best arrangement for all concerned so please be patient on that one. If the students do move up into the Grade 4 class, we will switch the order of Grade 3 Tap and Modern on a Thursday so there is no waiting around for those that will be Grade 3 Tap but then Grade 4 Modern.
