Exam Arrangements

With just a few days before our exams begin; please take the time to read through the following points, regardless of how many exams your child has done.

  1. Please remove all jewellery, nail varnish or body art. If your child has recently pierced ears please cover with plaster.
  2. Please bring water only. There is no need for food to be packed unless your child is doing two exams in the same day and is staying at Kitson Hall.
  3. Please arrive 45 - 60 mins ahead of your exam time. This is so that we can do your child's hair and account for the examiner running early. Whilst you may not think it takes this long to do your child's hair and get them ready; please be aware that there are 3 - 4 students in each group. For some exams Ellis goes in to the hall and we also have to keep in mind the examiner's breaks and refreshment needs. Additionally we are running between the studio and hall teaching so running a tight schedule.
  4. The foyer at Kitson is not large and sound travels very easily so the fewer people in the space the better. Please leave your child in our care. It is unfair if some parents ignore this rule whilst others observe it. Naturally children without parents there feel uncomfortable that their parent has not stayed, which adds an unnecessary stress to what we strive to be an enjoyable experience.

Thank you for observing these guidelines and please read carefully the following lists. In case you were not aware, pupils are marked on their presentation.

If you need anything new then please try to arrange this as early as possible. We carry one or two of each kit size in the studio so will need to order more if you all decide you need new uniform!

ISTD Exams - July 2018

We are pleased to be holding Tap + Modern exams at Kitson Hall on Sunday 1st July and Sunday 8th July 2018.

If this will be your child's first exam with Clifford Studios, please take the time to read the blog post here. It's about why we do exams and the school's approach to them.

You will have received an email stating which exam we are considering your child for, however, if you are unsure, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Process

Pupils will take their exams in groups of 2 – 4 and wear their Clifford Studios Tap + Modern uniform.

Approximately 6 weeks after the exam session, the ISTD will send the exam results through to the school. Pupils will receive either a Pass, Merit or Distinction. They are awarded marks in several criteria and the overall percentage totalled to ascertain their result.

The school distributes the mark sheets in a sealed envelope to each pupil. Pupils should not open these at the hall and pupils have no obligation to share their results with anyone other than their parents.

Following this, the school will receive the certificates from the ISTD and at this point, parents will be invited into the class to see their children receive their certificates.

Preparation

Pupils need to ensure consistent attendance throughout the year however, in ‘exam term’ (in this case the Summer Term), it is particularly important.

In addition to the once a week classes, pupils taking exams will be required to take part in coaching sessions. If the required number of coaching sessions/classes are not met, we will have to withdraw your child from the exam. We would far rather a pupil did not take an exam than did so underprepared. A positive exam experience is fun and enjoyable, however a negative one can be extremely damaging to a pupil's confidence and love of dance.

As pupils will be taking their exams in small groups, they need to rehearse doing so. This will include where to stand, which order to dance in and in general familiarise themselves with dancing some exercises solo.

Fees

Exams are a non profit making part of the school. The ISTD sets the exam fees themselves and we then charge a further fee to cover extra coaching (hall hire + teacher time), hall hire for exam day, examiner refreshment, practise music and music operator.

Usually we would request the total amount right away however, as we are waiting until half term to decide if some students are going to be entered, we are requesting the exam fee only at this stage. Please be aware that we will be requesting the coaching fee later. The amount of coaching required will depend on the students progress this half of term. We aim to keep costs down wherever possible.

Fees are as follows:

Primary Tap - £32.70
Primary Modern - £32.70
Grade 1 Tap - £33.70
Grade 1 Modern - £33.70
Grade 2 Tap - £35.70
Grade 2 Modern - £35.70
Grade 3 Tap - £41.90
Grade 3 Modern - £41.90
Grade 4 Tap - £43.90
Grade 4 Modern - £43.90
Grade 6 Modern - £50.00
